What is a spatial reasoning assessment?

A spatial reasoning assessment measures a candidate’s ability to visualize objects in two and three dimensions, mentally rotate and manipulate shapes, and understand how parts fit together in physical space. It reflects a specific type of reasoning that is separate from verbal or numerical ability.

Employers use it because strong spatial reasoning predicts performance in roles that involve reading technical drawings, planning physical layouts, or working with 3D models and machinery. It sits early in the hiring process for technical and design-oriented roles.

The result tells you how comfortably a candidate works with spatial and visual information — a strong signal for design, engineering, and technical roles, though it should be combined with role-specific evidence.

What does the assessment measure?

What candidates can expect

Candidates complete 24 multiple-choice questions in about 12 minutes. Each question shows a visual problem — a rotated object, an unfolded shape, or a 2D diagram — and candidates choose the correct 3D interpretation or match from a set of answer choices.

The test is timed overall, not per question. Instructions and a short practice example appear before the timed section begins, and a progress indicator shows how many questions remain.

How should employers interpret spatial reasoning results?

Strong indicates consistent, accurate visualization and manipulation of spatial information. Moderate indicates solid performance with some inconsistency on complex multi-step spatial tasks. Developing indicates the candidate found visualizing or rotating 3D information difficult within the time given.

A lower result should not automatically determine a hiring decision. Assessment results should be considered alongside interviews, experience, and other job-relevant information.
